Gila wilderness

heading over the middle fork of the Gila at the cliff dwellings tomorrow for a solo backpacking trip. I broke an old rule and started my trip book before getting in - For Whom the Bell Tolls. At one time I read everything Hemingway ever wrote and I don't know how I could have forgotten what a romantic he is? But this is the first time that I've done a trip in over a year and the first trip since moving to New Mexico. I'm still out of shape but if I have to limp in it won't be the first time. I especially look forward to seeing the Gila river as well as the cliff dwellings themselves. It is such a gift these mountains, this wilderness - Gila the oldest wilderness in the nation. Every once and a great while we humans do something worthwhile!
I'm hoping to commune with the spirits of the cliff dwellings and I pray for strength in more ways than one and I'll post back here how it goes.

Isn't it cold at night this time of year? It seems like spring has finally sprung here in the SF Bay Area...

went down to about 32 degrees every night except one night only 43 but daytime temperatures were in the 80's - I think the best time to go there would be about the second week of May, in terms of spring anyway. Amazing place! So 'western'. I've lived in the east all my life and it such a unique environment for me. Very dry with the "rivers" running through like long, narrow and wandering oasis' through the high desert. And my God so vast - one million acre wilderness. You can look from horizon to horizon and there is nothing but pure, unadulterated wilderness. The Gila Cliff dwellings is a perfect place to put in - a road runs from Silver City deep into the wilderness ending at the Cliff dwellings with numerous trailheads.

Yeah, I was there...in November...it was down in the 20s at night so I only stayed one night. I would love to go back sometime.
