Will be on a 6 week trip thru Central America. Prefer not to use airline baggage check if practical. No camping planned, yet. Will be using low budget inns, family run guesthomes, etc. (lonely planet travel book). Packing light and buying the extras that I might need along the way. Sooooo, any suggestions on type, size, brand or any other suggestions would be really appreciated, Thanks

i bought this pack: www.campmor.com/outdoor/ge...uct___90429 for a similar but shorter (3 week) trip and it was amazing for the price. its the maximum that can fit into overhead and is super comfy and keeps you from overpacking which is the cardinal sin of travel!! i have since kicked the crap out of the bag, used it for scuba equipment, for proper backpacking and it hasnt let me down. cant believe how good it is for so cheap!!

i highly recommend the eagle creek switchback. they're pretty versatile, but they're a little pricey.

just depends on your budget. but they're worth it. plus they have a lifetime warranty.

I'm a big fan of REI. Their staff should be able to show you the advantages of certain bags over others and you can try them on, put weight in them and carry them around the store for a while. Plus, they'll cover anything you buy there in case of damage, breakage, etc. I agree with the post above re: overpacking being the cardinal sin of traveling. Take the minimum amount of stuff and maybe pack a small stuffable bag as an extra for goodies to bring back, dirty laundry, groceries, etc.

    Have fun!
